Parts of Speech

Three little words you often see
Are ARTICLES: a, an, and the.

A NOUN's the name of anything,
As: school or garden, toy, or swing.

ADJECTIVES tell the kind of noun,
As: great, small, pretty, white, or brown.

VERBS tell of something being done:
To read, write, count, sing, jump, or run.

How things are done the ADVERBS tell,
As: slowly, quickly, badly, well.

CONJUNCTIONS join the words together,
As: men and women, wind or weather.

The PREPOSITION stands before
A noun as: in or through a door.

The INTERJECTION shows surprise
As: Oh, how pretty! Ah! how wise!

The whole are called the PARTS of SPEECH,
Which reading, writing, speaking teach.

The follwing list is by no means comprehensive. Consider it a start - to be developed as we go along. Do you have your own favorite pages about parts of speech? Please share them with us.

What is the difference between parts of speech and parts of the sentence?

1 comment:

  1. As I understand, parts of speech is the single words which are functionaly in a sentence consist of noun, adjective, verb, adverb preposition, conjunction and inter jection which are same as this post.

Parts of the sentence is the sentences which are functionaly in noun, adjective, adverb, preposition (I don't know clauses or phrases can be the verb in parts of the sentence or not?) but they are form in the phrases or clauses.
For example: What I learn in this class helps me to improve the english language.
What I learn in this class =>noun clause

    Tai
