I studied webs for dictionaries and I decided to buy an American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language. I ordered it to Amazon.co.jp today. I expect to have it by this Christmas but I'm not sure. Now I'm ready to start for learning English again.

Hi,Sadamu
ReplyDeleteI have a question? Why did you decide to buy this dictionary? Is any feature you like? I did not use it before. Thanks .

ReplyDeleteTry out the learner's dictionaries online too.
American Heritage is popular with and designed for native speaker high school and college students. That means it should have more study help and learner tools than a standard dictionary. However, it is not designed specifically for ESL use by non-native speakers. You may find this makes a difference. Or, since you do so much reading and have improved so much in your writing, you may find it satisfactory. As long as you need a bilingual dictionary to read the other dictionary, you should probably still be using a learner's dictionary.
Of course, you can and should use more than one kind of dictionary.
I wish there had been learner's dictionaries in Spanish and French when I was studying those languages. Back then you either used a bilingual dictionary or the same dictionary that native speakers used - and had to use the bilingual dictionary to read it.
I didn't have special reason to buy this dictionary. It seems for me to be a good one. If it's too hard for me to use it, I'll get another one.
ReplyDeleteI bought it at Amazon.co.jp by reasonable price. They said that I would receive it in few days. I'll write to you how it works later.
