WRITING: What is the TWE?

The Test of Written English (TWE) is a required part of the Computer-Based TOEFL. You must compose an essay in thirty minutes. This demonstrates your academic writing proficiency in the following:
  1. Generating and organizing ideas on paper.
  2. Supporting those ideas with evidence or examples.
  3. Using the conventions of standard written English.
TWE test results help institutions evaluate your academic writing proficiency and decide how to place you in writing courses.

What is the TWE? explains the TWE, its function, how it is scored, and sample essays.

In general, model TOEFL essays concentrate on: Suitable word usage; Content; Organization; Examples / Evidence; Formal writing style; Correct grammar and Sentence variety.

The best way to prepare for any writing test is by writing. Here are some sites to help you prepare for the TWE:

  1. I read all the pages that you send to us Ms Vanessa. I found them very-very interesting and very helpful. They guide me rightly. Especially “Argument & Opinion Essay Writing”,
I’d like to have a plan for each situation of essays. I want a driver to organize my thesis, to idea. I hope understand what I mean.
Sometimes I think that I haven’t ideas to write something. I known that I can write but I need some key phrases to drive me.
    Thank you for your time!

  2. I tend to think of standard essay topics as not being that interesting to write about. That is no doubt because I have assigned and read so many student essays on these and similar topics.

Anyone planing to take standards tests needs to learn how to write a standard essay. Otherwise, I thought they were not so good for just practicing writing. But your comments suggest I could be wrong. A standard topic and writing prompt is better than none at all.

Now, if everyone wrote and then commented on each other's writing, then we'd have a real writing group. Everyone would benefit.

  3. Hi,
I have been in the US for almost 4 years now. I understand better what people speak but I don't think there is much progress on my writing skill so, I would like teacher Vanessa and everyone in the class to point to me when I use the wrong sentences, strange grammar or words.
